<Synopsis>
In central Asia, there seems to be no end to the number of
women who commit suicide by burning themselves, protesting
against infringements on human rights such as violence by
their husbands. In Uzbekistan alone, over 200 women abandon
their lives every year. This proposed program focuses on why
these women have to burn themselves to death, and investigates
the psychological and social causes of this issue, while appealing
to the public for necessity to improve women’s rights.
This program will be screened at Japan Prize 2005.
Ms. Elmira Khasanova, the winner of this prize said, “I
feel deeply moved by being awarded such a great prize. By
producing this program, I wish to depict, through a life of
a woman, an issue some nations have, and help change discriminations
against women and violence by men for the better.”
Ms. Ivonne Kgame, General Manager, Content Hub, South African
Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) said, “The fact this
program tries to convey is not an issue of Uzbekistan alone.
By drawing attention to this case of Uzbekistan, we sincerely
hope the world will realize that many nations have similar
issues as well. Ms. Khasanova shows a great enthusiasm for
the job.” |
